Grenki: Russian Style French Toast

Grenki: Russian Style French Toast

For as long as I can remember, grenki were a special part of Sunday mornings growing up. We’d always use the leftover challah from Shabbos to make grenki. Grenki are a Russian egg toast, kinda like French toast. Challah is the perfect type of bread for grenki because of how moist it is and how well the challah absorbs the egg. If you don’t have challah, you can use any kind of bread. I hope you enjoy this delicious family recipe.

Ingredients:

  1. Eggs
  2. Bread (I used Challah)
  3. Salt
  4. Pepper
  5. Eggs
  6. Oil for Frying

Directions:

Cut up the bread in thick slices.

Mix some eggs with salt and pepper.

Dip the bread into the egg mixture. Make sure the bread is fully covered with the egg mixture.

Heat up some oil in a pan.

Put the egg covered bread into the hot pan.

Fry until brown/crispy.

Eat as is or drizzle some syrup on top.
