10 Ways to Improve Your Social Media Content

If you’re a business owner, creating and posting social media content should be at the top of your to-do list, especially if you’re struggling to get new customers. I’m Soreh, and I help businesses reach new customers through their social media accounts. I see so many businesses missing out on opportunities because they don’t post video content or post very low-quality content. We all have to start somewhere, so here are some tips to help you reach a wider audience.

1. Turn the Music Down

I know it’s tempting to put a fun song over your video. But if someone is talking, your viewers need to hear what that person is saying. They can’t do that if the music is louder than the person talking. So either turn it down so it’s extremely quiet or turn it off.

2. Use Subtitles

Adding subtitles can help you reach a much larger audience. Not everyone can access the in-app subtitles. People may not be able to listen to the sound on a video because they are at work, on public transport, at a family gathering, or for another reason. However, if you add subtitles, not only will they be able to understand you better, but they can also listen to the entire video without needing to use the sound.

3. Invest In Some Equipment

I know that it may not be in everyone’s budget, but if you can, invest in some decent equipment. All you really need is a phone with a good camera, some lights if the location is extremely dark, and a small portable microphone if the surroundings are very loud. If it’s light enough and it’s quiet, you don’t need lighting or a microphone.

4. Use Natural Light or Good Lighting

Don’t film when it’s dark outside, especially if you don’t have additional lighting. Try to schedule your filming when the sun is streaming through your windows. Your videos will perform much better if the video is clear and well-lit. Just avoid filming in direct sunlight, as you don’t want a glare. Use the sunlight to your advantage.

5. Respond to Everyone

You need to respond to your comments with more than just an emoji. Try to use at least 5 words in every response. It’s better to respond as soon as possible, especially if you just posted the video. This only takes a minute or two and helps boost the video. Stay on top of your direct messages as well.

6. Use Your Content to Teach or Entertain People

If the only thing you do is promote yourself and your business, people won’t follow you. People need a reason to watch your videos. You can promote yourself by teaching them something, making them laugh, or inspiring them to think. Think about the content you like to watch. Is it only people promoting themselves? Probably not.

7. Post as Often as Possible

There’s no such thing as too much content. You should be posting videos as often as possible. I post once or twice a day, every day, on my Scribble a Dream accounts. On my business account, Soreh Writes, I post content every weekday. And I will continue to increase it as time goes on. You need to remind people that you exist constantly. You need to keep people informed on what’s going on.

8. Everything is Content

Not sure what to post? Everything is content. Here are some ideas:

  • Day in my life as a business owner
  • How I started my business
  • Why I work as a business owner
  • What my business offers
  • The behind-the-scenes of my business
  • Things I like/dislike about being a business owner
  • And more

9. You Need to Be Patient and Realistic

Wanting to go viral and attract a large number of customers by posting just a few videos is unrealistic. It takes time to grow a following and viewership. It could take months or even years to become fully booked. But it’s worth it. Set realistic expectations.

You won’t go viral immediately. And you won’t get clients immediately. And just because a video does go viral, it doesn’t mean it will reach the right audience. You might go viral and not get a single customer. But you can also get 1000 views on a video and get 5 new customers.

10. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help

Learning to create great social media content takes time and effort. If you don’t have the patience or time, ask for help. I work as a social media coach in addition to being a content creator and social media manager. I’d love to help you learn how to navigate the social media landscape.
