Part 2: 10 Snacks You Have Got to Try While in the Netherlands

Snacking is universal. Every country has its own delicious snacks and traditions around them. If you live in the Netherlands or are just visiting, you cannot leave without trying some of the traditional Dutch snacks. Don’t forget to grab a beer while you’re at it. The Netherlands has some incredible ones. If you already read part one of this, you know I simply couldn’t fit all the snacks into one post. Here are some of the ones that I left out, but are well worth trying.

1. Kibbling

Kibbling is large pieces of battered fish, deep-fried. Cod was originally used for this delicacy, but now some other white fishes are also used. It is usually served with garlic sauce or tartar sauce. 

2. Kroket

This deep-fried snack is served in the shape of a cylinder. It’s filled with meat ragout and breaded on the outside. 

3. Bitterballen

These are my absolute favorite. They are similar to a kroket but round in shape and the filling is a bit thinner than in a kroket. They are perfect served with mustard. I can never get enough of these.

4. Stroopwafel

Funny story about these: the first time my boyfriend visited me in America, he wanted to bring stroopwafels for me, but he forgot them at home. Little did he know that I had already eaten them many times as they sold them in my workplace: Starbucks. A stroopwafel is two wafer cookies with caramel filling between them. It is so good when made fresh. You can buy them on Amazon.

5. Broodjes

There are several different kinds of broodjes. These broodjes are puff pastries filled with all sorts of deliciousness. Sometimes they are filled with minced meat, frikandel (sort of sausage), cheese, or more. 

6. Bossche bol

This sweet ball is filled with whipped cream and coated in chocolate. It is so good. My Dutch boyfriend’s family usually serves them at Christmas. They are filling and oh so yummy.

7. Kaassoufflé

This snack really reminds me of a mozzarella stick. It’s a thin dough filled with cheese and deep-fried. What’s not to love?

8. Hagelslag

If you ever thought sprinkles weren’t for breakfast, think again. The Dutch take a piece of bread, slather it in margarine, and add some sprinkles called hagelslag on top. Seems childish, no? Nope, not in the Netherlands. Grown adults eat it too. These yummy sprinkles are available for purchase on Amazon.

9. Borrelnootjes

Do you love peanuts? The Dutch take peanuts to a new level. These peanuts (sometimes other nuts) are coated with many different delicious flavors like barbecue or bacon. The coating isn’t a powder, but a crispy layer on top of the nut. Whoever created these were a genius. They are so addicting. These delicious nuts are available on Amazon.

10. Patat Oorlog

This fried goodness is made up of french fries topped with mayonnaise, peanut sauce, and fresh chopped raw onions. I have yet to try this one but it’s on my list.

  1. You missed poffertjes again. There are also broodjes with krente in them. When I visited The Netherlands in 1974, I stayed with my oma and opa in Groningen. My mother was from that city. I made the trip from Alberta, Canada which was my home. My mom and dad were post-WWII Dutch immigrants to Alberta in 1949 (my dad) and 1950 (my mom). My oma and tante immigrated to Alberta from Amsterdam in 1953. I would take day trips by train to visit and tour in other places such as Amsterdam where my father’s side of the family still had a house on the Amstel Canal. To make these trips, oma would put butter and slices of Gouda on the krente broodjes for me to eat. She also made me sandwiches with hagelslag or gestampte muijses which I also loved. And then, there’s always oliebollen.
